Managing A Basement Flood Cleanup Job

Managing A Basement Flood Cleanup Job

Facing a basement flood cleanup can be extremely daunting. If you do not have the equipment that professionals have it can be nearly impossible to do the job correctly. To ensure that you are getting all of the moisture out of the basement and protecting the health of those that live in the home it is almost necessary to hire professionals that have the tools and skills needed to get the job done right.

The first step in the process is to remove all of the visible water. In theory this can be done with a wet/dry vac, but that is sure to take hours if not days depending on the amount of water present. Professionals, however, have equipment that can remove the water using large machines with the suction power needed to remove the water quickly. The benefit of this is that the sooner the water is removed the less damage it will be able to do.

Once all of the visible traces of water have been removed more drying must take place. It is ideal to use as many high powered fans as possible as well as dehumidifiers. If the floor was covered in water there is not doubt that there is water in the walls, carpeting and other areas that if left untreated will become damaged with rot and possibly mold. Extremely high powered fans are ideal and surely would be provided by those that specialize in this type of service.

After all of the water is removed it is best to have the surfaces treated with mildicides as an added protection against mold and mildew. These chemicals can be very dangerous to be used by anyone that has not been trained in their use and does not have the proper protection equipment. Inhalation of these chemicals or improper mixture can lead to respiratory diseases and even death. If you choose to do this step on your own be sure that you have fully researched how to properly use them.

After all of the above steps have been taken it is best to continue to run fans and a dehumidifier. This will continue to decrease the ability of mold or mildew to grow. Any areas that have organic materials, such as walls made of paneling, should be monitored closely. They may appear to have fully dried only for large amounts of mold to grow over time. If the water was standing for some time before it was noticed it is advisable to have it removed immediately as it almost definitely has been damaged beyond repair.

It is possible to do a basement flood cleanup on your own, but it is not advised. Professionals have the experience, training and skills to greatly reduce risks to human health and increase the likelihood that everything can be saved depending on the cause of the flood. The choice of course is yours, just be sure to consider the information above before you make the decision to tackle it alone.
